The Happy Prince is a beautiful statue plated by slices of unalloyed gold. His eyes were made of two shiny sapphires and in the hilt of his sword there was a big red ruby. Everyone admired him.
One day, a small Swallow flew over the town. Her friends (other swallows) flew to Egypt, but she remained here, because she unhappily fell in love. She were sitting between foots of Prince some big drop of water fell on her. They were tears of Prince.
Prince was telling her about his life. He had human heart and he never found sorrow or lamentation. He lived comfortable and happily and this way he died. Now he see the lothing and misery of his town. Therefore he asked the Swallow and she carried round his jewells – sapphires, ruby and golden slices to poor people. The Swallow had to fly to Egypt, but she was helping Prince. And then, when the Prince was sightless the Swallow stayed with him. The cold, snow and frost came very soon. The Swallow kissed the Prince and got frozen. Prince's lead heart splitted. "Bring me two most precious things from that town," said God to one of his angels, and the angel brought lead heart and a dead bird...
The following day people unslunged and melted the statue, because it wasn't golden and beautiful. They made the statue of the mayor. But the lead heart wasn't melted, so they threw it away on the dump, where the dead Swallow lied.

The Happy Prince is one of the fairy tales of Oscar Wilde, it marks with fantasy, romance. The topic is simple (it isn't slowly-moving), naive and it is based on symbols and allegory. There are stock figures in the story (the people of the town), but most important is personification of the Prince and the Swallow.
I don't think, that it is a typical children literature, because the end is painful. It is a story for people, who took from childhood something happy, clever and immortal.
